Columnist; He could be pulling in big coin with the NFL Network. Or try
acting and be the next Vin Diesel. Or open one of those wild sports bars
where celebrities go to be seen. He doesn't have to devote his free time
to charity work, not in today's me-first society. Who does that anymore?
Well, Jared Tomich, for one. From Feb. 15 through the 19th, Tomich and
former University of Nebraska teammate Grant Wistrom will accompany
40 pediatric cancer patients from 10 cities across the nation to
Wisconsin for The Circle of Friends Winter Trip, sort of a Disney vacation
in snowshoes and mittens. The children, ranging in age from 6 to 16, will
visit Lambeau Field in Green Bay, then travel to Wausau for downhill
skiing, tubing, sledding, wagon and snowmobile rides, and
making new friends around the campfire. This is their time to have fun, to
block out the pain and hopelessness, and find reason to smile. "There were
some kids in the Lincoln area who were starting to go through chemo and
what we did was, after the games, we would bring them into the locker
rooms and shave their heads and take pictures with them," Tomich recalled.
