Nov 3 2006; HORTONVILLE WI Wisconsin snowmobile news story; Winter is a wonderful time for snowmobile mechanic; Many Wisconsin residents dread the arrival of winter. Lon Tesch is an exception. Snowmobiles are a huge part of Tesch's life. He loves driving them and is an expert at fixing them, a skill he puts to use as owner of Valley Snowmobile in Hortonville. Valley Snowmobile sells, stores, services and repairs snowmobiles and ATVs. The business is in a workshop behind Tesch's house. Tesch does the mechanical work himself handling everything from tune-ups and clutch work to engine rebuilding. Valley Snowmobile offers performance parts and products from four major snowmobile manufacturers Arctic Cat, Ski Doo, Yamaha and Polaris, specializing in the latter company. The business also sells used sleds. "I started out in my little office here and there was only enough space to work on two snowmobiles at a time," said Tesch, who also owns Tesch Construction, a company that specializes in the building of commercial projects. "Now I'm probably able to work on as many as 20 at a time." Read the rest of this Wisconsin snowmobiling article here...

Nov 1 2006; New York Snowmobile Story; Syracuse,NY,USA; ALBANY, N.Y. Get ready to snowmobile across the Adirondacks.State conservation and parks officials have issued a plan that would connect park communities with long-distance routes to boost winter tourism. The 17 proposed trail links include Ticonderoga to Forestport, Indian Lake to Raquette Lake and Plattsburgh to Lake George.
Several local officials and snowmobilers are backing the plan, but environmentalists say it would violate the law by creating de facto roads across the six (m) million acre park. The report estimates 18-hundred total miles of snowmobile trails in the Adirondacks. The report suggests protecting the environment by shutting some deep backcountry trails and establishing connector routes at the edge of forests and near highways and railroad lines. The report estimates total snowmobile-related spending at between 46 and 52 (m) million dollars in the Adirondacks each year.Check out the Newest, Sexiest Snowmobile Calendar on the Internet by Brice Photography

Playboy models, the girls next door, bare almost everything, on hot sleds.Wednesday November 01, 2006;Goderich ONT Ontario snowmobile trail story; Snowmobilers may face trail restrictions from Farmers in Ontario; At a meeting last week between the Huron County Federation of Agriculture and representatives from Districts 5 and 9 of the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs, OFSC; the HCFA made it clear they intend to support their resolution, asking farmers to close off their land to snowmobilers. This was not an easy decision to make, said HCFA president Steve Thompson is a press release issued last week. We have done everything we could to get government to respond to our on-going problems competing with the completely unrestricted imports of highly-subsidized U.S. grains, but to no avail. This decision comes one week after the OFA chose to not support Huron Countys resolution. We are, like many sectors who have collective bargaining rights, withdrawing our services to advance what we believe is a fair, sound, and for us, vital cause, said Thompson. Furthermore, the service we are providing is definitely not an essential service. Equally important is that this is a completely voluntary action for any individual farmer to consider. Some farmers will comply, some wont, he added. Get the rest of this On snowmobile article here...

Oct 30: Sault Ste. Marie ON.; Snowmobile Racing Press Realease; Ontario Canada; Welcome to a race that was conceived by the viewing of a 1968 Camaro in an auto dealers window. The idea came in the late winter of 1968 when several local businessmen were sitting in a local restaurant having coffee. Across the street in a Chevrolet dealer's window was a new Camaro, that emblazoned a painted job which noted that this model would be the pace car for the 1968 Indianapolis 500. Discussion about the car soon turned to one member who was an early snowmobile fanatic and the question was asked can your snowmobile run 500 miles. If you enjoy Nascar you will love the I-500 Snowmobile Race "Nascar on Ice" We are always looking for more volunteers. Racing rules is not part of the race committee. The track was actually set on an old creek bed of gravel and clay. The site was originally developed in World War II as an ammunition dump. The track was built in less than six months purely by volunteer help. The first year, the race was so slow that spectators could actually walk across the track between machines. It takes 3 weeks and 1,800,000 gallons of water to make the track. Water is transported from a hydrant in the pit area via the use of three 8,000 gallon tankers and many trips around the track. Oct 30, 2006; Star-Tribune; Safer on the snow. Of all the changes imposed by Yellowstone National Park's temporary winter use rules, the requirement for commercial guides is far and away the most successful in meeting National Park Service objectives. Yellowstone spokesman Al Nash said the park has seen "a dramatic decrease" in incidents of snowmobile riders harassing wildlife, venturing off limits, having accidents or violating speeding and safety regulations. The rules, which will remain in effect through at least the coming winter, allow 720 snowmobiles per day in Yellowstone. In Grand Teton National Park and the John D. Rockefeller Memorial Parkway, 140 snowmobiles are allowed. In Yellowstone only, snowmobiles and snowcoaches alike must be commercially guided, and all guides are trained by park officials. Oct 19, 2006: Baraboo, WI, USA; Wisconsin snowmobile news story; Snowmobile club membership on downward slope; By Scott De Laruelle. With a lack of snow in recent years and development encroaching on trails, area snowmobilers are finding it harder than ever to get out and enjoy some cold-weather fun. Still, die-hards like Pete Filus of Baraboo say all the trouble of working with state and local officials and landowners to find room to ride is worth it. The president of the Baraboo River Runners Snowmobile Club, Filus has spent countless hours in the past two years talking with landowners, maintaining trails and promoting snowmobiling, but has not had a chance to ride in Sauk County because of mild winters. Instead, he has journeyed more than 200 miles to get his snowmobiling fix he said last year Baraboo had less than two good weeks for snowmobiling."We've had some years (area trails have) never opened," Filus said. At least 8 inches of snow base is needed to ride safely and efficie ntly, Filus said. "You don't want to damage peoples' property," he said. Incorporated in 1969, the Runners are down to 21 members from a high of about 80 a few decades ago. Filus said lack of snow the last few years has hurt interest."It's tough for people to get involved," Filus said. "It seems to be the same six or eight guys doing all the work." Willy Wayne, vice-president of the Sauk County Snowmobilers Association, said busy lives are another reason ."It's tough to get people to help out, so it's hard to get new members," Wayne said. "There is so much going on with kids and everything else sports they don't have the free time." Get this WI snowmobile story now, click here...
August 23, 2006; California Dreaming; Written by: Dan Gardiner; California is not well known for its snowmobiling, or even its mountains at all. Indeed, the most populous state in the union is better known for high levels of smug and Arnold Schwarzenegger in the governors seat. However, California is home to some of the best snowmobiling terrain in the world. The state of California has a population of 36 million people, but there are only a mere 20,000 registered sleds in the state. How could there be so few snowmobilers in such a large population that is situated close to the mountains? Wyoming boasts more than twice as many registered sleds with a population of only 500,000! The answer is that California is the largest opportunity for growing the snowmobile industry. More on this California snowmobile news story here...
Sunday, October 15, 2006; Portland, ME, USA, Maine snowmobile story; At the New England Outdoor Center, they don't worry too much about weather hurting business in the summer . The company, which provides lodging and organizes whitewater rafting, hiking, kayaking and wildlife tours during warm weather, doesn't cancel those activities if it rains. And payments are non-refundable if a customer cancels within 45 days of a trip, even if it's because it is too cool or wet for their liking .Winter, however, is a different season. The folks who head to Millinocket or Caratunk from December through March are mostly interested in one thing. "In the winter, people that go snowmobiling know what they're looking for," and that's lots of snow on the ground to roar over, said Linda Meehan, office manager for the center, who added that the company offers refunds or credits if snow is lacking. "It dramatically affected business last year," she said. "We had a lot of people that didn't come. There was just no snow."In Maine, more than many places, tourism is driven significantly by the weather. Except for diehard shoppers, the Maine experience is built around the outdoors.
